Reuters plagiarizes Wikipedia (7/31/07) Speaking of bridging the gaps in the journalism profession, did anyone notice the "Army stands down in N.Ireland but scars run deep" story (7/31/2007) plagiarized Wikipedia? Compare this line from the Reuters article [pdf]: Traveling overland in South Armagh during the 1970s became so dangerous the British army began using helicopters to transport troops and supply its bases. ... to this line from Wikipedia's entry on the Provisional IRA South Armagh Brigade [pdf]: Travelling overland in South Armagh eventually became so dangerous that the British Army began using helicopters to transport troops and supply its bases - a practice that had to be continued until the late 1990s. The line appears on the Wikipedia entry as far back as the original entry on the topic on 2/22/2006. If only there were some web-wide database of writings upon which we could submit work to detect plagiarism... we could give it a nifty name like "Turnitin.com" (drat, it's taken!).
